WHO IS MAïïN ?

Bio

Romain Thorel began music at the early age of 5. His passion for it grew which led him to study in the conservatories of Gennevillier, Nîmes and Montpellier. There he received graduates which allowed him to study everything from piano and French Horn to contemporary music and music theory. Besides having a fantastic musical education, Romain has been involved in many different groups in various different genres, both live and in studio.

One of his main projects over the years has been rock band LAZULI. He began working with them in 2009 playing piano, French horn and contributing to vocals. The band have since toured the UK, Europe and America, as well as recording seven albums including one DVD.

Besides rock, he has also been part of US hip hop group KRAZY SPACE, pop band CIADEL and several jazz/gospel/soul formations such as THE SOULFULL EXPERIMENT, the gospel choir from Montpellier GOSPEL SOUL MASS CHOIR and the septet jazz B.A.N.B (Big AlterNative Band).

Romain’s love for music took him back to the conservatory of Nimes’s where he was accompanist in the dance classes from 2009-2015. Additionally as a freelance musician he has worked with dancers Julia Moncla and Saliha Guehairia as well as with Ballet Preljocaj.

Taking his passion even further he paticipated in the arrangement of several short films, documentaries and feature film soundtracks such as “L’écume des jours” (Michel Gondry) and  “Polina, danser sa vie” (A. Preljocaj and V. Müller).

Involving himself in such a vast amount of genres and projects has nurtured his creativity and shaped both him as an artist and his stage presence. Today he embarks on his own adventure, putting all these experiences to the service of music and developing his own sound.

Romain Thorel now presents his new project MAïïN. The mixture of keyboards, French horn, vocals and electronic drums create a wonderful alchemy between the two worlds of chemical electronica and organic acoustic. Inspired by artists such as Rone, Thom Yorke, Sigur Ross and James Blake, the aim was to produce steady and airy beats incorporating powerful and captivating keyboards with sharp but mellow bass. MAïïN is keen to use diverse art forms, unique ephemeral performances and live improvisation as well as artistic collaboration to make his music come alive. Creating a memorable experience with every live show.

The first Album “Elektrees” with Teddy Marin on the electronic drums was released in October 2016 for download and the first music video “AïNA” followed shortly after. The album is now available on the website, YouTube, Spotify.
